Dr Lewis Walker
Consultant Psychiatrist
Dr Lewis Walker is a Consultant Psychiatrist based in Western Australia.
He is a fully registered specialist and general medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). He obtained a Bachelor of Science with honours degree from the University of St Andrews in 2003. He completed his medical and surgical training at the University of Dundee and obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 2008. He has been working in the field of psychiatry in Australia since 2013. He completed five years of specialist psychiatry training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) in Western Australia. This included two years of sub-specialty training in the field of Forensic Psychiatry. Thereafter, he gained Fellowship with RANZCP and an advanced training certificate in Forensic Psychiatry. He also completed a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health with the University of New South Wales. Dr Walker has completed further training with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners and achieved accreditation as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner. In 2020, Dr Walker received the Medlicott Award, a binational award for academic excellence in the field of Forensic Psychiatry. He is an academic mentor for medical students at the University of Western Australia and an accredited supervisor with RANZCP for trainee Psychiatrists. Dr Walker holds an academic position as Senior Clinical Lecturer at the School of Medicine, Fremantle Campus, University of Notre Dame.
Dr Walker has held Consultant Psychiatrist positions at Perth Clinic, WA State Forensic Mental Health Service, Frankland Centre, Casuarina Prison, Graylands Hospital and MLCOA (Medicolegal Consultants of Australia).
Dr Walker provides assessment and treatment for individuals between 15-65 years old. He has a special interest in the following areas of psychiatry: general youth and adult psychiatry, ADHD, mood disorders (including depression and bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders (including OCD, generalised anxiety, social anxiety and phobias) PTSD, addiction (including alcohol and substance abuse problems), personality disorders, psychosis (including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and substance induced psychosis). Dr Walker also has a special interest in neuromodulation including the use of rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) in the management of psychiatric disorders.
Dr Walker also has extensive experience in providing medicolegal assessment and reports for both criminal and civil matters as well as providing specialist opinions on risk assessment, psychiatric treatment and management. He has expertise in the use of structured professional judgement tools in the assessment of violence, sexual violence psychopathy and stalking. He also has expertise in preparing psychiatric reports for a variety of civil matters, such as fitness for work reports, independent medical assessment for insurance cases and DVA matters.
Dr Walker provides face-to-face assessments at the clinic in East Perth or via Telehealth, giving patients more flexibility and access to psychiatric services. Dr Walker also has admitting rights to Perth Clinic for individuals requiring inpatient hospital treatment and access to a variety of psychotherapy groups including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).
